The more we learn about gut bacteria, the more we realize just how crucial to our health they are. The gut microbiome affects not just our digestive system, but also our immune system, nervous system, hormones – well, all of us – each and every cell in our body. Poor gut health is tied to nearly every disease there is in some way, because the gut is where much of our immune system lives and where inflammation often begins.

Having a less than healthy microbiome has been linked with a variety of digestive problems, as well as Alzheimer’s disease, depression, seasonal allergies such as hayfever, more than 80 types of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune underactive thyroid disease (Hashimotos), and so on.

As well as taking some quality bacteria, such as AquaSource Acidophilus (and AquaSource Bifidus, both of which are found in the AquaSource Start Easy Pack, and also available singly), it’s important to give attention to our diet as well.

We’ve long known that fibre in the form of vegetables and a little fruit is vital, but more information has come to light from researchers at the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre. They designed 25 different diets with varying levels of protein, carbohydrates, and fat which they fed to a thousand mice, looking for patterns in whether the mice’s microbe species increased or decreased based on their diets.

It’s known that gut bacteria require both carbon and nitrogen, which they get from the food we consume. The nitrogen comes only from protein foods (not carbohydrates) and the researchers found that the mice receiving more protein and less carbohydrate had more good bacteria as a result. More work needs to be done in this area, but meanwhile ensuring you have enough nitrogen from protein in your diet can only be helpful.

Fortunately AquaSource Lactobacillus (and the Bifidus product too) both contain Klamath Lake blue-green algae, which comprises 60% protein.

If you’re working with digestive issues, you may wish to add AquaSource digestive enzymes for additional help, and otherwise a good combination would be AquaSource Green Energy and Colostrum 3 which are both supportive of the immune system.

Meanwhile, generally improving the diet by eating plenty of anti-inflammatory foods and fermented foods such as raw unpasteurised sauerkraut and kefir, keeping stress at manageable levels if possible, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly and moderately, will help to support a healthy microbiome.

The AquaSource unique Acidophilus strain helps promote a healthy gastrointestinal system and maintain an essential balance of intestinal flora, to maintain good digestion and improve the absorption of nutrients from foods.  AquaSource Algae Superfood is added to provide a wide range of nutrients, including antioxidants, betacarotene and chlorophyll.

Probiotics are healthy bacteria that have long been known as a supplement to the natural bacteria needed to promote proper digestion. One strain that has proven to have a much better ability to colonise the gut for sustained periods with regular use and provide more essential health benefits was discovered by Dr. Khem Shahani, a professor of food science at the University of Nebraska. This strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus, known as DDS-1, has been shown to survive stomach acidity, resist bile salts, and grow well in the gut.  This is the strain used in AquaSource Acidophilus.

Key Advantages

Promotes General Intestinal Health – Changes in bowel microbial balance may occur as a result of diet, illness, certain treatments, and poor bowel health.  AquaSource Acidophilus helps promote general intestinal health by introducing desirable bacteria into the gut that can be sustained with regular use.
Provides Vitamins B6, B12, and Folic Acid – AquaSource Acidophilus provides vitamins B12, folic acid, and B6 while helping to maintain already healthy cholesterol levels when taken as a daily supplement.
Lactose Intolerance Support – Our acidophilus produces more lactic acid than comparable strains of L. acidophilus. It also produces more beta-galactosidase. Since people with lactose intolerance lack sufficient levels of this enzyme, it can be a helpful way to augment lactase deficiency.
Supports Gut Health – Changes in bowel microbial balance may occur as a result of diet, certain treatments, illness or poor bowel health. Though the resident intestinal microflora acquired at birth is usually somewhat permanent in creating a defense against undesirable bacteria, when homeostasis is disrupted, gastrointestinal health may be negatively affected. Regular use of probiotics such as AquaSource Acidophilus, helps support gut health by contributing to the maintenance of good bacteria in the intestine.
