Several health complications may arise on long airplane flights or car journeys, due to the body being confined in a cramped position for hours at a time.

Most travellers are aware of the very serious condition called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT. This involves the formation of a blood clot inside a vein (deep or superficial), which can break off and travel through the bloodstream to the lungs and block the flow of blood.

This is called pulmonary embolism or PE and is very serious as it can damage the lungs and other organs in the body and cause death.

Fortunately, there is help at hand, as the antioxidant Pycnogenol(R) has been shown to protect passengers on long-haul flights from developing thrombosis.

A research study conducted by Gianni Belcaro tested the antioxidant Pycnogenol in a group of 198 high-risk individuals for developing thrombosis.

Half the participants were given a placebo, whilst the other half were given Pycnogenol.

Participants remained in a sedentary position for more than 8 hours, mostly on flights between London and New York.

The results showed that among the placebo group of 97 there were 5 people who developed thrombosis.

In contrast, none of the 101 high-risk subjects who were given Pycnogenol  developed thrombosis during the long-distance flight.

Pycnogenol has also been shown to be effective in 15 different studies in reducing leg and ankle swelling, including pain, cramps, feeling of heavy legs and reddening.

In Switzerland Pycnogenol is registered as an over the counter product for venous insufficiency and better circulation.
