Sleep More, Lose Weight!

A new study suggests that overweight teenagers could lose weight if they got more sleep, and the heavier kids would benefit the most.

Reported in Pediatrics 2013; 131:1 7 last week, researchers studied just over 1400 children over the course of 4 years (age 14 till 18). They took into account their height, weight, and sleeping habits (weekdays and weekends).  Checks and interviews were carried out every six months.

More studies need to be carried out (no data on caloric intake was collected), but based on observational study, the researchers predict that increasing hours of sleep from 8 hours to 10 hours could lead to a 4% reduction in obesity among U.S. children.

Note: 4% would equate to 5lb in a 9 stone person.
