Why Do We Need Antioxidants?

Super Antioxidant with Pycnogenol

“Natural forces within us are the healers of disease.” Hippocrates

We’ve all heard of antioxidants, and many of us already have the good sense to ensure we have plenty of them in our diets and supplement programmes.

But what are ‘oxidants’? What is it we are taking ‘anti’-oxidants against?

We’ve all seen oxidation in action in our daily lives. When an apple is cut in half, its surface goes brown – that’s oxidation as a result of it being exposed to oxygen. Any cook worth her salt knows that by rubbing the apple with lemon juice (vitamin C), it will prevent the browning. When our iron garden gate goes rusty, that’s oxidation – water plus oxygen causes iron to rust. Oxidation has been referred to as ‘biological rusting’.

Simply put, oxidants are highly reactive oxygen molecules, called free radicals, which can destroy tissues – particularly cell membranes and DNA. Electrons in molecules usually come in pairs. When oxygen is burnt in the body – a process which is absolutely necessary for life – one of the pair can get stolen by another molecule. This makes the remaining one unstable – it’s now a ‘free radical’. It doesn’t want to be on its own though – it belongs in a pair – so it rushes around frantically looking for another electron to mate with. It’s not fussy where it gets it from either – it will take the easiest electron it can get hold of, and doesn’t care in the least that it’s now leaving another electron without its mate! The problem is, this newly bereaved electron now has to go on a desperate search for a new mate, and before we know it we have a chain reaction of damaged molecules. All this happens at a speed which would make you dizzy to contemplate, whilst all the while creating many problems throughout the cells and tissues of our bodies as more and more molecules suffer the damage caused by these frantic radicals which are desperate not to be free and alone.

These free radicals attack the body from all directions – inside and out. Excess sun exposure, alcohol, smoking or other pollutants such as diesel, or cleaning materials in our homes. Or trans-fats in baked and fried foods. Or exposure to radiation of X-rays at the Dentist or hospital, or artificial chemical shower gels and shampoos – all these things and many more will create free radical oxidative damage in our bodies. Basically, any physical, mental or emotional stress, and even just breathing and ‘living’ causes free radical activity.
And because oxidation is able to disrupt and destroy cells, if there is too much free radical activity in the body, it will develop degenerative diseases – everything from heart disease to cancer, skin conditions to arthritis.

All does not have to be as gloomy as it sounds, however. The body is well equipped to look after itself, and it has the mechanisms in place to do so. Afterall, the body is perfectly able to make its own antioxidants, and does so daily. All it asks of us, is that we give it enough of the raw materials it requires to constantly repair damage. Repair is the body’s job, and it’s very good at it, so long as we co-operate.

How? That’s easy!

Nature always provides what is required. The human body makes its own antioxidants (but not enough for modern life, and they decrease with age). Antioxidants are found widely in our food supply. They enjoy each others’ company – in nature we’ll find many different antioxidants occurring together. There is nothing as good as a diet high in fresh organic vegetables, herbs and spices like rosemary and turmeric, algaes, seeds and nuts. Organic fruits (especially the colourful berries) also have powerful antioxidant value, although should be eaten in moderation due to their fructose content. For good health, all you’ll need to add to this is good quality protein and essential fatty acids.

Once you have a good diet, due to modern life and unavoidable high levels of pollution, it’s important to add a broad spectrum antioxidant supplement, like AquaSource Super Antioxidant with Pycnogenol.

This applies particularly to the elderly, and to smokers or heavy drinkers, people following a low calorie diet, and people who take pharmaceutical medications or already have known decreased health.
